We grew up with those games and they certainly had an impact on us. Am I crazy or is there definitely a homage going on here?Įven though it wasn’t necessarily something we aimed for, it wasn’t something we avoided either. There’s something about Leo’s design and aesthetic that really hearkens back to the early days of European computer gaming, especially those classics from the Amiga platform. A character that could both be funny and warm but also express a certain level deeper emotions like sadness and insecurity. Since the story plays a big role in the game, we needed a character that had some depth. We wanted to create a character that looked a bit different from what you’ll usually find in a video game. I’m curious if these were inspirations for the character and his wild mustache? When I first saw Leo he reminded me of a wacky cross between Nintendo’s Mario and a Star Trek tribble. 1337 Game Design is my company, and Senri is Johan Knutzen’s and Shahrouz Zolfaghari’s company (the two programmers on the team). The name is a mix of the two companies that made the game: 1337 Game Design and Senri. Speaking of the unusual, 1337 & Senri, LLC is an interesting name for a development company. It’s not much fun to do the same thing over and over again, so we try to mix things up by experimenting with different game genres and art styles for each new title. Given your background working on more mature fare like Battlefield 2 and the Dark Nebula series, what made you decide to lighten things up with a whimsical platformer like Leo’s Fortune as 1337 & Senri’s debut game?įor each new game we create, we like to do something different. Anders Hejdenberg, head of developer 1337 Game Design was kind enough to take some time out to let us ask him a few quick questions about Leo and what the future holds for both his furry mustachioed hero and his company. After playing through the amazing mobile game that is Leo’s Fortune, we just had to interview the crew that put so much hard work into this magical title.
